Do I Need An ADHD Therapist or Coach?

ADHD therapists and coaches both can be extremely helpful but unless you have unlimited time and resources, how do you choose which to see and when especially if you have never consulted with a therapist or coach before? This blog post will give you a quick general breakdown of what to expect from an ADHD therapist vs an ADHD coach so you can make the best choice for what you need. Note that all therapists and coaches are a little different so it’s best to consult beforehand to find the right match for you.

ADHD therapists are often focused on the holistic emotional experience of living with ADHD. They will generally be more concerned with the ways that ADHD is affecting you psychologically, such as how it is impacting your mood and the quality of your relationships. Though ADHD therapists will offer strategies and tools for coping with ADHD, they tend to not be as directive and look at ADHD as part of the bigger picture that you as a client are bringing into the sessions. ADHD therapists are there to help you gain self insight so you can best navigate your life in all areas and offer support when things feel wobbly. Therapy can be short term or long term depending on what you agree to with your therapist.

ADHD coaches are often more focused on how to create strategies and structures to help you navigate life with ADHD. Unlike therapists, they tend to be more directive and provide more concrete resources. With an ADHD coach, you are more likely going to be following a program that is tailored to you and focuses on the areas that you would like to work on, such as your relationships or career path. Though ADHD coaches will often address mindset and some of the emotions that come up around ADHD, they are generally taking more of a problem solving approach than an investigative angle. Coaching tends to be shorter term and intensive and can be one on one or in groups.

ADHD therapists and coaches can help you navigate life with a neurospicy brain in a neurotypical world. They both have their strengths and both modalities can work well together to help you with the emotional framework and skill set to tackle the many absurdities that life throws your way.  Get in touch with us to schedule a free consultation with one of our ADHD therapists or coaches today.
